grainThe smallest unit of mass in the three English systems (avoirdupois, troy, and apothecaries' weights) used in the UK and USA, equal to 0.0648 g. It was reputedly the weight of a grain of wheat. One pound avoirdupois equals 7,000 grains; one pound troy or apothecaries' weight equals 5,760 grains. grain

The "pinhole" process itself, applied to a commercial developing paper that is intended for color enlargements, yields images totally unlike the typical Cibachrome print, with its saturated colors and grainless high resolution. Nasmyth's and James Carpenter's photographs of rather inaccurate plaster models of the moon which, paradoxically, relied on a laborious method called the Woodburytype process to achieve their grainless surfaces. |
