larceny

In the USA, and formerly in the UK, theft, the taking of personal property without consent and with the intention of permanently depriving the owner of it.

In some US states, larceny in which the value of the property exceeds a specified amount is grand larceny; larceny involving lesser amounts is petty larceny.
