grand operaType of opera without any spoken dialogue (unlike the opéra-comique), as performed at the Paris Opéra, France, in the 1820s to 1880s. Grand operas were extremely long (five acts), and included incidental music and a ballet. Composers of grand opera include Daniel Auber, Giacomo Meyerbeer, and Ludovic Halévy; examples include Verdi's Don Carlos (1867) and Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots (1836).
