grass tree

Australian plant belonging to the lily family. The tall, thick stems have a grasslike tuft at the top above which rises a flower spike resembling a spear; this often appears after bushfires and in some species can grow to a height of 3 m/10 ft. (Genus Xanthorrhoea, family Liliaceae.)
