lens, gravitationalObject in space which, by its gravitational field, bends light in a similar way to a spectacle lens. As a result of this, one object, such as a quasar, can appear as multiple images. A gravitational lens also produces a magnifying effect. Numerous examples are now known of such multiple imaging. Images of quasars and galaxies are also stretched into arcs by gravitational lenses. How to thank TFD for its existence? | The Hubble Space Telescope captures a bevy of curvy galaxies 13 billion light-years, distorted by a gravitational lens. The cluster's enormous mass acts as a gravitational lens, magnifying, brightening, and distorting images of more-distant galaxies. The researchers accomplished their feat without the aid of a so-called gravitational lens, an intervening duster of galaxies whose mass boosts the light of distant objects On its way to earthly observers. |
