sycamore

Any of several Eurasian trees of the genus Platanus of the family Plantanaceae. Species include the oriental plane tree P. orientalis, a favorite of the Greeks and Romans; the American sycamore P. occidentalis of the eastern USA; and the Arizona sycamore P. wrightii.

All species have pendulous burlike fruits and some grow to 100 ft/30 m high.

Sycamore

City and administrative headquarters of De Kalb County, northern Illinois, 8 km/5 mi northeast of De Kalb, on the South Branch of the Kishwaukee River; population (1990) 9,700. Founded in the 1840s, it is a trade centre with metal and machine industries.
