Greenfield

Town and administrative headquarters of Hancock County, central Indiana; population (2000) 14,600. It is situated on Brandywine Creek, 32 km/20 mi east of Indianapolis. It trades in local agricultural products. Local light industries include the canning of tomatoes. James Whitcomb Riley, the ‘Hoosier Poet’, was born here in 1849. His birthplace, a museum, is on Main Street.

Greenfield

Town and administrative headquarters of Franklin County, northwest Massachusetts; population (1998 est) 18,300. It is situated at the junction of the Connecticut and Green rivers, 58 km/36 mi north of Springfield. Industries, which include the production of tools, paper, and electrical components, have declined, and the economy is now based more on tourism and insurance services. Founded in 1686 as the Green River settlement, a part of Deerfield, Greenfield was separately incorporated in 1753.

Greenfield was an important silverware manufacturing centre in the early 19th century. It still makes silverware for the US government and embassies.

It is home to Greenfield Community College (1962).

Greenfield

Town in Milwaukee County, southeast Wisconsin; population (1990) 33,400. It is situated on the Root River, 19 km/12 mi southwest of Milwaukee city centre. Greenfield is a residential suburb.
