Greenwood

Town in Johnson County, central Indiana; population (1990) 26,300. It is located 16 km/10 mi south of central Indianapolis. It is a primarily residential suburb, although auto accessories and canned goods are manufactured in the town.

Greenwood

Town and administrative headquarters of Leflore County, northwest Mississippi; population (2000) 18,400. It is situated on the Yazoo River at the east edge of the Mississippi Delta, 135 km/84 mi north of Jackson. It has thrived as a cotton market since the Choctaw American Indians were dispossessed in the 1830s, its trade interrupted only by the Civil War. Today its economy is also based on light manufacturing, food processing, and meatpacking.

Greenwood

Town and administrative headquarters of Greenwood County, northwest South Carolina; population (2000) 22,100. It is located 106 km/66 mi west-northwest of Columbia. Settled in 1824, it grew after the arrival of the Greenville and Columbia Railroad in 1852; railways eventually made it a centre for cotton and synthetic fibre mills, as well as food processing and meatpacking plants. It is home to Lander College (1872) and to a technical college.
