Any of a group of extinct giant ground sloths of North and South America. Various species lived from about 7 million years ago until geologically recent times. They were plant-eaters, and some grew to 6 m/20 ft long. (Genus Megatherium.)

Among the bones discovered in the caves were those of a 7-foot Shasta ground sloth (which expired 86,000 years ago), a prehistoric horse, a bear and a coyote.
Adults of some ground sloth species approached 5 meters in length.
Anthropologist Paul Martin believes that the extinction of the mammoth, mastodon, ground sloth, and the saber-toothed cat directly or indirectly resulted from the "prehistoric overkill" by exceptionally competent hunters.
