destroyerSmall, fast warship designed for antisubmarine work. Destroyers played a critical role in the convoy system in World War II. Originally termed ‘torpedo-boat destroyers’, they were designed by Britain to counter the large flotillas built by the French and Russian navies in the late 19th century. They proved so effective that torpedo-boats were more or less abandoned in the early 1900s, but the rise of the submarine found a new task for the ‘destroyer’. They proved invaluable as anti-submarine vessels in both World War I and World War II.

During an interview with Reuters news agency reporters regarding the attack in 2000 on the USS Cole in Yemen in which suicide bombers using a small boat rammed the guided missile destroyer, Allen said, "We haven't put nearly as much thinking in science and technology and (general) thought into the small-vessel threat as we need to and I think that's where we need to go to next. The next Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer will be named in honor of VAdm. Like its other Arleigh-Burke Class ships, DDG 112 will be a 9,200-ton multi-mission guided missile destroyer capable of conducting a variety of operations, from peacetime presence and crisis management to sea control and power projection, in support of the National Military Strategy. |
