benzoin

Resin (thick liquid that hardens in the air) obtained by making cuts in the bark of the tree Styrax benzoin, which grows in the East Indies. Benzoin is used in cosmetics, perfumes, and incense.

The name is also given to several bushes of the genus Lindera belonging to the laurel family, growing in eastern North America, especially the common spicebush (L. benzoin).
