gurdwaraSikh place of worship and meeting. As well as a room housing the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book and focus for worship, the gurdwara contains the langar, a kitchen and eating area for the communal meal, where male and female, Sikh and non-Sikh, may eat together as equals.

| Moved by the ceremony at the Sikh gurdwara that we visited in Toronto, one member of the group wanted to fully engage in the experience and bow before the Sikh holy book as other students did, but felt unable to. Each day, members of the commune prepare a free meal for all those who worship at the gurdwara, the Sikh temple. In attempts to adhere to the most salient aspects of their religio-historical identity, Sikhs have built a gurdwara (Sikh site of worship) wherever they have migrated. |
