gust

Temporary increase in wind speed, lasting less than two minutes. Gusts are caused by rapidly moving air in higher layers of the atmosphere, mixing with slower air nearer the ground. Gusts are common in urban areas, where winds are funnelled between closely-spaced high buildings. Gusting winds do far more damage to buildings and crops than steady winds. The strongest gusts can exceed speeds of 100 m/328 ft per second.
