habanera

Cuban dance named after the city of Havana. The most popular dance in Latin America during the 19th century, it was the ancestor of other dance forms, including the Argentine tango. The habanera is usually in slow duple time (2/4) and uses a variety of standard rhythms. There is a celebrated example in Bizet's opera Carmen (1875).
