HadithCollection of the teachings of Muhammad and stories about his life, regarded by Muslims as a guide to living second only to the Koran. The teachings were at first transmitted orally, but this led to a large number of Hadiths whose origin was in doubt; later, scholars such as Muhammad al-Bukhari (810–870) collected together those believed to be authentic, and these collections form the Hadith accepted by Muslims today.
