haematemesis

Vomiting of blood. It may be due to: having swallowed blood (after a nosebleed or surgery in the mouth); peptic ulcer; or rupture of varicose veins in the oesophagus, a complication of cirrhosis.

These patients present with gastrointestinal bleeding, often an initial smaller 'herald' bleed followed by a massive haematemesis and/or haematoschezia.
Case report A 31-year-old man with a history of alcohol abuse was admitted to our hospital with recurrent episodes of epigastric pain, haematemesis and melena.
Later Charlie finds his own patience tested by a truck driver with abdominal pains claiming he has a history of haematemesis.
