haemolytic disease of the newborn

Rare form of haemolytic anaemia due to incompatibility of blood groups between mother and baby. It causes liver failure, brain damage, and sometimes death. It can be treated prenatally (see fetal therapy) or immediately on delivery by exchange transfusion. See also rhesus factor.
