handicap

Disadvantage placed on a superior competitor to allow competition on level terms. For example, a golfer's handicap is calculated by deducting from the number of strokes the person takes to complete 18 holes the par for the course (the number of strokes a first-class player should take to complete the course). Other sports using handicapping systems include horse racing, sailing, and polo.
