handkerchief

Small square of soft fabric used to wipe the nose. The handkerchief was popular as a fashion accessory in the 19th century, made of cambric, muslin, linen, or silk with an embroidered lace edge. In the 20th century it became more functional and has been largely replaced by disposable paper tissues, although handkerchiefs are often worn in the breast pocket of a jacket as a decorative accessory.
