handle

In computing, term used on Internet Relay Chat and other live chat services for a nickname.

A given user's handle may or may not be the same as his/her user-ID; on many systems users are allowed to pick any name they like to use on chat systems as long as it is not already taken by another user.

Handles are also used on CB and ham radio, and hackers use handles, for cultural reasons as much as to disguise their real identities.
