hansom cab

Two-wheeled horse-drawn carriage in which the driver's seat is outside behind the body, the reins passing over the hooded top. Originally called the ‘patent safety cab’, it was designed in 1834 by Joseph Hansom (1803–1882), who received £300 for his invention.
