force feedback

In virtual reality, realistic simulation of the physical sense of touch. This is an area of active research, as many applications of virtual reality are useless or impossible without it.

For example, force feedback is essential in medical training systems to teach the students how hard to press with a scalpel in delicate areas of the human body. Even simulated games need force feedback in order to allow objects to respond realistically to falling or being hit.

In the second half of the 1990s, force feedback became popular in joysticks, hand-held controllers, and steering wheels used with computer games on personal computers and game consoles.
