The eight species of the marsh harrier, a long-winged hawk, are found among fens, swamps, marshes, and reed beds throughout Europe, North Africa, and the islands of the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. They feed on reptiles, amphibians, eggs, small mammals, and even carrion which they seek by quartering the ground in low flight and then dropping down.

Any of a group of birds of prey, family Accipitridae, order Falconiformes. Harriers have long wings and legs, a small head with a short beak, an owl-like frill of thickset feathers around the face, and soft plumage. They eat frogs, birds, snakes, and small mammals, and are found mainly in marshy areas throughout the world.

The northern harrier or marsh hawk (C. cyaneus) is native to North America.

harrier

Breed of hound, similar to a foxhound but smaller, used in packs for hare-hunting.

Harrier

The only truly successful vertical takeoff and landing fixed-wing aircraft, often called the jump jet. It was built in Britain and made its first flight in 1966. It has a single jet engine and a set of swivelling nozzles. These deflect the jet exhaust vertically downwards for takeoff and landing, and to the rear for normal flight. Designed to fly from confined spaces with minimal ground support, it refuels in midair.
