The harmonic series. Those marked x are not in tune with the normal scale. The members of the series have a proportional relation to each other. Thus if the lowest note vibrates at 64 cycles per second, the octave above it will be at 128 cps, the G (no. 3) at 172 cps, middle C at 256 cps, and so on.

The composite series of notes that can be produced by a vibrating substance or air column.
