Harper

Town in the southeast corner of Liberia, 440 km/270 mi southeast of Monrovia; population (2001 est) 14,900. It was settled by freed American slaves in the early 19th century, and became linked to the rest of the republic in 1857; the surrounding area is known as Maryland. Coffee, oil palms, rubber, and cocoa are produced locally.
