Havelock

City in Craven County, southeastern North Carolina; population (1990) 20,300. Havelock is located 52 km/32 mi east of Jacksonville, on East Creek (an estuarial southern arm of the Neuse River).

Havelock was for a long time a small agricultural trade centre, but became a hotbed of bootlegging during Prohibition. Its principal function nowadays is as a service centre for the Cherry Point Marine Air Station, just northeast of the city.
