WASTE OF SPACE Visitors travel 3 to 5 hours by boat to reach the beaches of Costa Rica's Tortuguero National Park--home to hawksbill, green, and leatherback turtles. But Sea Mountain Five LLC, a collaboration of California and Big Island investors, recently proposed building a 2,000-unit resort complex on the beach, and environmentalists fear this could spell trouble for critically endangered hawksbill sea turtles. Little Cayman Beach Resort has established a program with local scientists for guests to help survey the endangered green, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles by recording sightings on dive slates. |
