head voice

The upper register of the human voice, referring to the head as the area of sound production. The head voice of a male singer is called falsetto. However, there has been disagreement (in the 19th century and earlier) concerning the precise use of the term, some claiming that only head voice and chest voice (the lower register) exist, others claiming that a third middle register is also important. Today, there is less concern about these distinctions.
