abutment

In architecture, term denoting that part of a pier or wall which supports the sideways thrust of an arch.

abutment

In machinery, the point at which resistance is obtained. Thus the breech of a gun and the end of a steam cylinder are the abutments to the explosive or expanding force.

In civil engineering the abutment is a solid structure that resists the thrust of an arch.
