heavy metalStyle of rock music characterized by a distorted electric guitar sound and virtuoso guitar solos. Heavy metal developed out of the hard rock of the late 1960s and early 1970s and was performed by such groups as Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple (formed in 1968), and enjoyed a revival in the late 1980s. Bands included Van Halen (formed 1974), Def Leppard (formed 1977), and Guns n' Roses (formed 1987). |
