One of several temperate Old World orchids, including the marsh helleborine (E. palustris) and the hellebore orchid (E. helleborine) introduced to North America. (Genera Epipactis and Cephalanthera, family Orchidaceae.)

The rattlesnake orchids (genus Goodyera) of North America are sometimes placed in the genus Epipactis.
