helmet shell

Carnivorous mollusc found in tropical seas and the Mediterranean. Helmet shells resemble whelks in appearance, having thick heavy shells with prominent edges. Some species attain considerable size, 10-20 cm/4-8 in.

Classification

Helmet shells are members of the superfamily Tonnacea, subclass Prosobranchia, class Gastropoda, phylum Mollusca.
