helper application

In computing, in Web browsers, an external application that adds the ability to display certain types of files. Common helper applications include RealAudio, which allows browsers to play live sound tracks such as radio broadcasts or recorded lectures; Acrobat; and mIRC, which allows access to Internet Relay Chat via the World Wide Web.
