| Hem believes that in the visible world there are void places-- vacua, and something more--holes, as it were, through which animate and inanimate objects may fall into the invisible world and be seen and heard no more. In a poem he has to say that there is pride and rivalry between the cities of the earth, and that "the men that breed from them, they traffic up and down, but cling to their cities' hem as a child to the mother's gown. It appeared to stand out in marked contrast and incongruity to all its surroundings, and when I stopped to examine it, I found that it was a small strip of muslin--part of the hem of a garment. |
