henotheism

Belief that there are a number of gods, but that one particular god has a special relationship with a particular family, clan, or tribe. This means that for that group there is no other god, but allows for the existence of other gods. Some biblical scholars see hints of this pre-monotheistic attitude in the Hebrew Bible - for example in Psalms 83:1.
