slipped disc

Protrusion of the soft inner substance of an intervertebral disc through the outer covering, causing pressure on nerve roots. It is caused by heavy or awkward lifting or sudden twisting of the spine or bending. Symptoms are severe pain, with sciatica, and immobility. There is a range of treatments available, including bed-rest, traction, or osteopathy, with analgesics for the pain.
