herpes genitalis

In medicine, an infection of the genital organs caused by the Herpes simplex virus. It is transmitted by sexual intercourse. Infection is marked by the formation of blisters on the genitals and pain. Treatment is with antiviral drugs, such as aciclovir, used orally or as creams. It can be passed from mother to child during birth, causing life-threatening illnesses and blindness.
