In the end, of course, "The State Within" is more concerned with lapel-grabbing drama than with policy wonkishness (hence, the sex scenes); its flashily chaotic editing and camerawork underscore its loyalty to genre histrionics. There are electro-disco confections aplenty, including "I Don't Feel Like Dancin"--the best floor-filler ever about playing the wallflower, complete with Elton John on piano--but the standout track comes toward the end, with all histrionics set aside for the captivating mid-tempo love song "Might Tell You Tonight. If Daniel Baldwin's DeFranco comes across as the most compelling victim, it is in part because he's not required to deliver any downstage-center histrionics, and partly because Baldwin seems convincingly sodden with grief. |
