Tree or shrub of the genus Ilex, family Aquifoliaceae, generally with glossy, sharp-pointed leaves and red berries. American holly I. opaca of the eastern USA is used for Christmas decorations. Leaves of the Brazilian holly I. paraguayensis are used to make the tea yerba maté.
