23 gala, dubbed "One World," showcased dance traditions from countries that included India, Brazil, Ireland, Japan, and China, as well as homages to ethnic traditions performed by dancers from American Ballet Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, the Joffrey Ballet, and Luna Negra Dance Theater. That's where the script, written by Winkler and first-timer Mark Friedman, checks off its long list of homages to ``The Best Years of Our Lives'' and (minus the partisan hectoring) Oliver Stone. In 2002, his first work for wind ensemble, Homages, was awarded the Walter Beeler Memorial Composition Prize from Ithaca College and the first Frederick Fennell Prize from ASCAP and the College Band Directors National Association. |
