hornfels |
Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.01 sec. |
hornfelsMetamorphic rock formed by rocks heated by contact with a hot igneous body. It is fine-grained, brittle, and lacks foliation (a planar structure). Hornfels may contain minerals only formed under conditions of great heat, such as andalusite, Al2SiO5, and cordierite, (Mg,Fe)2Al4Si5O18. This rock, originating from sedimentary rock strata, is found in contact with large igneous intrusions where it represents the heat-altered equivalent of the surrounding clays. Its hardness makes it suitable for road building and railway ballast. How to thank TFD for its existence?
