horned toad

Common name for several species of lizard. Horned toads have large spines or horns on their heads and pointed scales, vary from 7–12 cm/3–5 in long, and are found in arid areas of North and Central America. An example is the desert-dwelling spiny moloch.

When attacked, horned toads inflate the body with air, gape, hiss, and bite.

Classification

Horned toads are in the genus Phrynosoma, family Iguanidae, suborder Sauria, order Squamata, class Reptilia.
