horsetail

Plant related to ferns and club mosses; some species are also called scouring rush. There are about 35 living species, bearing their spores on cones at the stem tip. The upright stems are ribbed and often have spaced whorls of branches. Today they are of modest size, but hundreds of millions of years ago giant treelike forms existed. (Genus Equisetum, order Equisetales.)
