Careful arrangement of computer workstations and other office or home furniture can reduce the risk of eye, back, and neck strain, and repetitive strain injury, for those who use a computer a great deal. Regular breaks away from the screen are also essential.

Study of the relationship between people and the furniture, tools, and machinery they use at work. The object is to improve work performance by removing sources of muscular stress and general fatigue: for example, by presenting data and control panels in easy-to-view form, making office furniture comfortable, and creating a generally pleasant environment.

Good ergonomic design makes computer systems easier to use and minimizes the health hazards and physical stresses of working with computers for many hours a day: it helps data entry workers to avoid conditions like repetitive strain injury (RSI), eyestrain, and back and muscle aches.
