Humble

City in Harris County, southeastern Texas, 26 km/16 mi north-northeast of Houston city centre; population (1990) 12,100. The city stands on the West Fork of the San Jacinto River, and was founded in 1888 in what was later discovered to be the huge Humble Oilfield.

The many natural gas and oil wells in Humble began to be exploited in 1904, and in 1909 a group of local businessmen formed the Humble Oil and Refining Company, now part of the Exxon Corporation. Manufacturing of oil equipment is a major industry in the city; Houston International Airport is situated immediately to the west.
