Hunter

River in New South Wales, Australia; length about 483 km/300 mi. The Hunter rises in the Liverpool Range, north of Merriwa, and follows a winding course south and east through the Hunter Valley before flowing into the Pacific Ocean near Newcastle. The river is dammed at Glenbawn, 15 km/9 mi east of Scone, for irrigation purposes.

The Hunter's basin is an immense coalfield, and the Hunter Valley is an important coalmining region. Although the river is liable to flooding, the Hunter Valley has dairying and market gardening, and is one of Australia's most important wine-producing areas.

Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Semillon wines are produced in the Hunter Valley region, and citrus fruits, stonefruit, grapes, strawberries, and flowers are grown. The river was named after John Hunter, Governor of New South Wales from 1795–1800.
