hydrocarbonAny of a class of chemical compounds containing only hydrogen and carbon (for example, the alkanes and alkenes). Hydrocarbons are obtained industrially principally from petroleum and coal tar. Unsaturated hydrocarbons contain at least one double or triple carbon–carbon bond, whereas saturated hydrocarbons contain only single bonds.

Results were fairly similar, with some hydrocarbons a little higher in the West Valley tests and some a little lower, officials said. Lin Yan and George Helou of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and their colleagues used an infrared spectrometer on the Spitzer Space Telescope to find the hydrocarbons in distant galaxies that undergo spurts of intense star formation. What they've found may someday result in a commercial product that could remove hydrocarbons and other stubborn hazardous compounds such as chemical warfare agents, explosives, and insecticides from solid materials. |
