hydrogen cyanide

Poisonous gas formed by the reaction of sodium cyanide with dilute sulphuric acid; it is used for fumigation.

The salts formed from it are cyanides – for example sodium cyanide, used in hardening steel and extracting gold and silver from their ores. If dissolved in water, hydrogen cyanide gives hydrocyanic acid.
