hydrology

Study of the location and movement of inland water, both frozen and liquid, above and below ground. It is applied to major civil engineering projects such as irrigation schemes, dams, and hydroelectric power, and in planning water supply. Hydrologic studies are also undertaken to assess drinking water supplies, to track water underground, and to understand the role of water in geological processes such as fault movement and mineral deposition.
