hydrologyStudy of the location and movement of inland water, both frozen and liquid, above and below ground. It is applied to major civil engineering projects such as irrigation schemes, dams, and hydroelectric power, and in planning water supply. Hydrologic studies are also undertaken to assess drinking water supplies, to track water underground, and to understand the role of water in geological processes such as fault movement and mineral deposition. |

Other processes, such as stylolitization and thermochemical sulfate reduction, commonly take place without significant groundwater flow in hydrologically stagnant systems that are geochemically closed. The watershed protection approach is a place-based strategy that integrates water quality management activities within hydrologically defined drainage basins, or watersheds, rather than areas defined by political boundaries. This was where I wanted to go explore, hydrologically speaking of course. |
