hydrophobic

Describing functional groups that repel water (the opposite of hydrophilic).

The hydrophobic effect is the apparent attractive force between hydrophobic groups in an aqueous environment. Micelles, biological membranes, and many proteins owe their structures to this effect, with the hydrophobic parts of the molecules clustering together, away from the water.
